Tile backer boards give you a strong, stable surface to tile onto. You may need them if you're:
- tiling a shower or wet room: water-resistant foam backer boards should be used instead of plasterboard.
- tiling over timber floors: backer boards add stiffness and help prevent tiles cracking.
- fixing large or heavy tiles to a wall: backer boards can take more weight than plasterboard or plaster.
- covering an uneven or damaged wall or floor: they give you a flat, sound surface to tile onto.
We sell Delta Thermal Construction Boards in 6mm and 10mm thicknesses. Delta boards are made from lightweight, high-density foam with a reinforced cement coating, so they're water-resistant, easy to cut and carry, and suitable for both walls and floors, including showers. Delta boards also insulate well, which helps electric underfloor heating warm up faster. Each 600 x 1200mm board covers 0.72m².
Which thickness do I need? Both thicknesses can be used on walls and floors. As a general guide:
- 6mm: best for covering an existing solid surface, such as a timber or concrete floor, or a plastered, plasterboard or brick wall. 6mm keeps the height of your floor to a minimum, which helps it line up with doorways and other rooms.
- 10mm: the better choice when fixing boards straight onto timber stud walls, in showers and wet rooms, or where a floor needs extra stiffness. 10mm also gives a little more insulation over underfloor heating.
Fix your boards following the instructions on the product page, staggering the joints, and seal the joints and screw holes in wet areas. If you're not sure which thickness you need, please get in touch.
